Been trying (and failing horribly) to fly a plane in FlightGear, a FOSS flight simulator. The tutorials were so fucking nerdy, going through all the switches, controls you need to switch around and check-ups you need to do to start a plane in real life, but thankfully there's an autostart feature for those who... erm, would like a less true to life experience. |

The G in GStreamer stands for gay. Jokes aside seems to just be GNOME reinventing the wheel and creating a hexagonal one, which is oh so revolutionary. Seriously though it seems to have some different architectural design choices than ffmpeg, but beyond that it seems to have the same feature set. I guess there will be some unique upsides and pitfalls for both, reading about it makes me think GStreamer is easier to link to by programs than ffmpeg which... is a command-line tool, you'd rather want to link to the underlying libav* & co. libraries. |

Yeah LXQt is a pretty nice lightweight DE. I use it on my laptop and in VMs, although sometimes it feels... empty, like there's something missing from it. For my desktop I use KDE Plasma though, but with the compositor disabled which basically makes it snappier and minimally resource intensive, but even then it's still kinda large and heavy for what I need. My holy grail would probably be a lightweight floating WM that's completely independent and has decent support for Qt and GTK theming (basically... the Plasma desktop but smol). But everything I've tried kinda sucks so I'm sticking to Plasma for lack of better options. |

To be honest I've been kinda torn on what to do. I honestly don't feel like making a general purpose forum software which would compare myself not only to other Acmlmboards but also more professional forum softwares. But rather a forum where the forum software source code itself just so happens to be available and fairly usable if anyone wants to use it. It's still more accessible than completely private forks such as AB2.064. And it is already rather easy to install, basically just "import the database schema and fill out the config file", something I would assume any budding forum owner would be able to accomplish... or I'd be worried for their forum. Oh also, the FAQ page is already generated from an array which creates an automatic TOC and handles the layout and whatnot. I could totally extract it to its own file under conf/ if I wanted to but I like having it version controlled right now. |

ffmpeg is a command-line frontend that exposes the libav library which does the actual heavy lifting (akin to openmpt123 and libopenmpt). It was also briefly the name of an ffmpeg fork a decade or so ago. |

Huh? It was, at the top of the forum listing and below the announcement bar. Now you can only get to it by the "All Announcements" link. Announcements get posted to an actual forum here unlike in AB2.5 where they get posted into the void. |

Oh yeah that is pretty cool too, I've actually done that for making music videos, combining an audio file and a static image into a video. It's a whole lot easier and faster than opening up Kdenlive and making it there especially when doing an entire soundtrack in bulk. In fact, I think this even deserves an entire thread just talking about ffmpeg. |

Spawned from >>231 et al. in the Internet Media Clusterfuck thread, gush about what wonders ffmpeg can do. ffmpeg is an extremely powerful command-line tool to manipulate any kind of multimedia formats you could imagine, whether it be video, audio or even images. You can quickly convert between formats simply by designating the file extension, compress and reencode videos, compose together videos from e.g. an audio file and static image, and pretty much anything else. I genuinely can't stress enough how powerful ffmpeg is and how much it can do. You can even record videos using it, which is pretty useful since you have essentially full granular control over quality settings and can do stuff like recording close to uncompressed videos at minimal CPU overhead for whatever you're recording. And then you can process it into a significantly smaller file and quickly slap an audio file or even tracker song on top of the video, all using ffmpeg. |
