long post today.

so, voxelmanip... after two years, we're back together again, you and I. I have metamorphosed, assumed a different form: but deep down inside, despite everything, it's still me.

bored, lonely, and maybe feeling a little nostalgic, too. as roller said in the Webfishing thread, "everybody is miserable nowadays," and I guess that includes me too... oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know that it really looks like the internet is going to crap, but VM feels different. so you know what? in this thread I'm gonna try and "spread my wings" a little, get back into it, if that makes any sense.

and even if nothing really comes out of it, well, at least I had some fun. so, let's get down to brass tacks :)

in the same spirit as roller hosting a minetest/luanti server, I'd like to host a minecraft server for this forum. it'll be a private and small community. my personal ideal minecraft experience.

I was thinking, something like the Back to Beta SMP that I watched some videos of. it's a group of people that like to play old Minecraft versions, and they just found each other and started up a server for themselves.

although I am not opposed to running more modern versions of MC, I thought that maybe an alpha/beta server would encourage me to build more things. And maybe we'll have some mods too.

so, with that said, I'd like to ask you folks some questions, if you're interested:
  • what version of Minecraft would you like to play? modern, alpha/beta, or somewhere in between?

  • any mods that you would like the server to have? I'll see if I can get them working...

  • any other ideas for this server, if it comes to fruition?

  • finally, the most important for last: do you see yourself investing at least a bit of time into this server? I know it's an odd question to ask, but I'd love to see the server be alive for at least a little bit to make it all worth it...
again, I would also prefer if this server was private, not that we're doing anything shady, but rather so we don't get random griefers. I'll probably just only send the IP in discord DMs or something. although there are probably "server password" mods or something that would prevent griefing, I'll see what I can find.

I have a crappy old windows 8 laptop from like 12 years ago  that I could get a lightweight Linux distro and the server on it. I know it's not much, but it's just lying around and I'd like to see it have some use again. I'll run some testing on it to see if it's up for the task.

Thank you for your time :)

Would be fun to see a Minecraft server either directly or loosely associated with this forum, whichever direction you would want to take it. I'm open for it. Though this forum is still pretty dead so I don't know if anyone else would show up to play on the server.

I used to be very interested in old versions of Minecraft, specifically b1.7.3 as the last version before the Adventure Update. I played a lot on Puucraft about half a decade ago when it would have been on the... tenth map iteration? Don't remember but I accumulated a lot of diamonds and became very wealthy after pulling some stunts with the server's economy. Then it reset and I basically just left.

In addition to that I also ran my own Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 server around that same timeframe but with a bit of a twist. Basically I had modified the server to make it use the unused sky world generator, just like what the Aether had based off of it. It was called SkySMP, and it had a website at sky-smp.tk which is since long ago gone. I should still have all the files for it stashed away somewhere but the most accessible remnant of it is this YouTube video I recorded after I had ported the modification from a mod to the vanilla server jar to a CraftBukkit plugin:

Nowadays it's been a long time since I played the pre-release versions of Minecraft. The slowness of the versions that don't feature sprinting really gets tiring after a while. Last summer I played on a Minecraft 1.21 server started by a regional Discord server I'm in, I invited a friend to play along with and we built a base together (video). It was fun but after three weeks or so the activity plummeted and I don't know the current status of the Minecraft server. I think he turned it off and is holding on to the map for the future.

I've always yearned for a classic Minecraft SMP experience. When I was growing up I would watch ZackScott's Minecraft Let's Play where he was playing on his own SMP server with a rotating cast of various friends and frenemies. And the first "season" of that let's play fits neatly in to the pre-b1.8 Minecraft experience. Back then I was playing a cracked/offline version of Minecraft, so I was mostly excluded from the mainstream SMPs and minigame servers my classmates would play on and did not know about the existence of offline mode servers at the time.

Now I own the game legally after someone gifted me an account in 2023 so I can join just about any server. But I also realise I don't really have time to invest into an SMP anymore. Not to mention that the private servers I have joined in recent years and have shut down after a month at most when everyone stops playing, making them a very ephemeral time sink.

...

Going to answer your questions also...

I suppose the selection of the game version would come down to either b1.7.3 or 1.7-1.12. Going below b1.7.3 has increasingly unstable and unfinished netcode, and b1.8-1.6.4 is this void for me because I've never really been fond of any of those versions. Lack of mipmapping and some other visual and non-visual QoL features combined with the bad terrain gen is what makes me feel that, probably. 1.7 is where it becomes fun again, and then we can set another end at 1.12 for technical reasons because past that point the system requirements for a server basically increased exponentially. You can be the one to decide which of those versions to go with, but if you pick b1.7.3 I would just suggest this CraftBukkit fork which AFAIK is the most maintained public server software for that version.

Mods? Don't know, I haven't dabbled a lot into modded Minecraft. I'm sure that could be interesting.

I personally don't know if I would be able to invest much time into the server. But I would of course stop by and show my presence on the server hopefully.

I would play, I've increasingly found Minecraft boring in recent years, but I think this is due to playing it solo. For these sorts of things it (obviously?) helps to have a regular somewhat scheduled time where people play together.

Release 1.7 is where I started playing Minecraft so I am naturally biased to versions around there. I played a bit of Beta 1.7 recently on 2beta2t which was kinda fun walking around and exploring the mess, but once I got out to the wilderness it's basically just solo playing again which meh.

I would be down for anything pre-1.13, though just playing 1.12 isn't a very interesting idea :P

alright, some responses! the forum isn't entirely dead, woohoo!

so, I've been looking into versions that I think would be good to play on. I know it sounds kinda silly to be putting that much thought into it, but we all know there's been plenty of changes to the MC formula over the years, so I'm sure it's understandable.

so, considering what I've been given, plus my own perspective:
  • beta 1.7 might encourage us to build more things, as there isn't any big "goal" like the ender dragon. but roller said he'd get tired of lacking sprinting

  • seems like release 1.0 to 1.6 is too boring, worldgen is too bland

  • release 1.7 is a good candidate, I hear there was a huge modding scene for it back in the day, maybe it's still going?

  • release 1.8 is the last version before the combat update. I like a lot of the new blocks added after 1.8, but I don't really like elytras... I feel like the elytra + firework combo breaks the game too much, but maybe that's just me?

  • seems like we're not interested in anything after 1.12, which also had a big mod scene and pretty good technical specs like roller said
so, personally, I'm thinking somewhere around 1.7 or 1.8. to me it seems like a nice balance between the slower pace of older versions, but with some new blocks as well.

as for mods and plugins: I'm still looking to see what works in multiplayer. I just realized you can whitelist servers, so it seems like I don't really need a password plugin. I'd love to try some good modpacks, I mostly just play with boring clientside optimizations. I'll see what my computers can handle.

again, I'm thinking of running the server on my 12-year old laptop with a minimal linux distro, so hopefully it doesn't explode o_O

...if it's not clear enough, this is my first time even attempting any of this  I've been doing some reading on how to do everything, so I'll start testing once I've got everything down pat.

I see olive also mentioned having a regular time on which to join the server. I think that'd be a good idea. I don't know about you, but I've got plenty of free time right now, so I'm available to keep things running smoothly.

again, I know it seems like I'm overthinking things, but I'd really like to try and make the most out of this. some years ago, I used to play on a private server hosted by an old high school friend, and I've always wanted to have that kind of experience again.

thank you for your responses! :D

Beta 1.7.3, or modded 1.2.5 w/ Tekkit
[2026-01-31 Edit] Never mind, you should start an XtreemNodes server!
